Goodwill MLK weekend

I found  myself without children and grandchildren for a weekend - totally unheard of. My plans were to clean house and purge the garage, watch tv and read a book. Of course some of the best laid plans can always change...like mine did. My friend called me Friday night to see if I was free to go to the Goodwill on Saturday and of course I jumped at the chance (hadn't gone Goodwilling for a very long time). We made plans for the morning and she picked me up around 10. Before heading out of town - we made a stop to McDonald's for our usual iced coffee (lasts much longer being cold) and gas, than we headed for Capitol Hill. I had found some great gifts for the grandkids for Christmas at the Goodwill at Capitol Hill. After this stop we headed for Capitol Hill Value Village - after a couple stops around the block found a place to park. Not much was happening here - found a couple of books and some games. Value Village is a great place to buy books - buy 4 get 1 free. Next stop was Seattle Goodwill. Fourth stop was Renton Goodwill after we stopped for a bite to eat at Panera Bread (I give this store kudos for their customer service). Last stop was Tukwila Goodwill. Of course I found some great treasures along the way. Pictures following. This time I grouped them in similar items. Let me know which way you like it better. The choices are grouped alike or grouped by what store I bought the items.

This is what I found on this trip:

Of course the Tigger slippers are mine and who can resist for only $1.99. Kenz will love the Tom's pink slip ons and the Vans tied shoes for $6.99 each. Little E will love both of the slippers I got him (the first thing he does is takes off his shoes and on go the slippers).

I wasn't planning on getting clothes this time around - but who can blame me for these great buys. 2 Car sweatshirts for $2.50 each regular $4.99 each, a tshirt for $1.00 regular $1.99, 2 coats for $2.50 each regular $4.99 each.

I can always use new sweatshirts - for some reason I spill more stuff on them and for the right price I don't mind getting rid of them - $4.00 regular $7.99 and I found this in the kid's section.

I normally get my books at the library or on my Kindle, but because the weekend was here and the library I frequent was closed on Saturday - I decided to buy a few books for me - to keep my entertained until I can get to the library. Plus the price is pretty reasonable.

Like I have said before -Value Village has the best deal on books - buy 4 get 1 free (of course it is the lower price - but still free is free). This picture shows the books I got were all children books - should keep them entertained for awhile.

Even though Little E has mastered the trike - I thought maybe he could turn the trike over to L and he could try the bike - we will see - it sure is sturdy and even a hot wheel at that - $9.99.

I am always on the look out for art paper - it's so darn expensive. Along with a hard book, a stencil art book, 2 magazines ($.50 each - where can you buy a magazine for $.50), a metal box (great for storing things), a rug to place by my bed (this way I won't track floor ickies into my nice clean sheets - $2.50 regular $4.99) and a pack of notepads (twins love these) and sticky notepads (I love these).

Where do you go for your children's games. I use to pay full price at any name store until I found the Goodwill and Value Village has great prices on gently used toys (sometimes they have never been opened - how about that!) - This trip I found the plastic Lincoln logs (never opened for $2.99), the cribbage board (never opened- $3.99), travel magnet backgammon set for $2.99, a build it set for $6.99 (looks like all the pieces are in the box), a word puzzle (never opened - $2.99), a small soccer ball - $1.99 (we keep losing them to the dog) and a nice tile rummy set. Not to bad.

Crafts galore - that is what Goodwill is great at. They combine a bunch of stuff together for a low price of $1.99. I bought the scrapbooking bags full of things I can use and things I am going to donate to an auction. - Way to go, Jini! Pack of fun scissors $2.99, water color project (never opened - haven't decided if I will keep it or donate), pencils, twistable crayons and a frame for $.50 (great gift).

$5 Friday at Safeway on September 19th

Have you checked out the sales Safeway has going on $5 Fridays. Wowza! To take part in these great specials you will need a Safeway card.

I know that I will be taking part in this Friday's sales. Here is what I will buy. 3 pound of green or red grapes  $5.00 (I bought both the green and the red grapes last week and the green were hard and crunchy - Love them! The red grapes which are better for you - more nutrients are in the darker colored fruit - were not as tasty).

In addition, my daughter needs to eat more grass fed meat per her doctor to help keep her hormone level in check and this Friday 1 pound grass fed lean ground beef is only $5.00. Compared to Costco this is a steal (3 - 1 pound grass fed ground beef for $18.36). 2 pound of Tillamook cheese for $5.00 and Florida's Natural Orange Juice 89 oz. for $5.00.

Are you going to buy anything on $5 Friday?

Goodwill over Labor Day weekend

Sunday, Laura was headed north to take her niece home and asked if I wanted to join them for the ride with stops at the Goodwill on the way home. I said sure because the alternative was to stay at home and do yard work and fold the clothes. YECK!

Our first stop was Bellevue Goodwill - Sheesh! The lines were long with only 2 cashiers. I bought a pair of Birkenstock Disney sandals and a black long sleeved shirt for Kenz.
Sandals $12.99
Shirt $2.00 reg. $4.99

Next stop was Renton, I bought 6 t-shirts and a pair of sweats for the twins and 2 plastic dishes for either to use for an art project or to put under a plant.
6 Shirts $5.00 reg. $ 9.99 total
Sweats $1.00 reg. $1.99

Final destination was Tukwila. We were under the gun since we thought the Goodwill closed at 7, but we were surprised it didn't close until 8. I bought a box of safety latches, a pair of Keen sandals (future for twins) and a pair of sweatpants.
Shoes $ 5.99
Pants $.99 reg. $1.99
Safety Latches $.99 reg. $ 1.99

Laura and I arranged to meet up at 9 in the morning on Labor Day to begin our jaunt in the Seattle area Goodwill and Value Village. Because it was a holiday - sale prices varied from store and location.  But of course I found a few treasures - nothing on my list but a bookcase with moveable shelves. YEAH!

Our first stop was a coffee and gas in that order. Then we headed toward Burien Value Village - it was a zoo, didn't stay long. Next stop was Burien Goodwill. I bought 3 bike helmets for the twins (1 to go to my mom's and 2 to stay at my house - hopefully they fit because both boys have 2 totally different head shapes). Also I bought a package of safety locks and a rectangular cake pan with cupcake inserts for traveling (this will be great for school).
Blue Bike Helmet $.99 Reg. $4.99
Yellow and Green Helmet $3.59  each reg. $4.99
 Cupcake Holder $ 3.99
Latches $ 1.19 reg. $1.99

Got back on the freeway and was headed for Capitol Hill, but was too close to the Seattle Goodwill not to go there first so we changed the order of stopping and swung into the parking lot. I bought 2 magnetic locker stuff for Kenz, a sweatshirt, measuring spoons, a swimsuit, 4 packages of children's hangers, a box of safety locks, an ornament, foam door hangers (art project), a wired mesh container (to hold socks for Kenz), wedge sandals and a black block (to hang on the wall and put a word saying that I bought previously at the Goodwill).
3 packs of hangers for $.59 each reg. $.99 each
1 pair of sandals $3.59 reg. $5.99
Measuring spoons $.59 reg. $.99
Black Block $.99 reg. $4.99
Container $1.99
1 pack of hangers $.59 reg. $.99
1 magnetic locker write on $.59
1 magnetic frames $.50 reg. $.99
Wish ornament $1.19 reg. $1.99
Weed line $1.79 reg. $2.99
Safety latches $1.19 reg. $1.99
Door Hangers $.59 reg. $.99
Swimsuit $ 2.99 reg. $4.99
Kid sweatshirt $.99 reg. $4.99

After the Seattle Goodwill, Laura and I headed back to the freeway towards Olive Way to try and find a place to park in Capitol Hill Goodwill. We ended paying for the parking space for 1 hour. Did you know you have to pay tax on your paid parking? We were surprised. Learn something new every day.

I got 1 metal pot, 1 construction set (toy for the twins later on), rain boots, 4 kids tops, airplane origami paper, construction toy, plastic beads (I'm going to melt them), pipe cleaners and a paint project.
Metal pot $ 2.99 reg. $4.99
Construction playset $4.19 reg. $6.99

Rain boots for me $1.79 reg. $2.99
Grand Slam shirts $.99 reg. $2.99
Striped shirt $.99 reg. $1.99
Blue Button shirt $.99 reg. $3.99
Blue shirt $.99 reg. $2.99
Plastic Beads $ .99 reg. $3.99
Pipe Cleaners $.59 reg. $.99
Paint set $.59 reg. $.99
Origami paper $2.39 reg. $3.99
Construction Toy $1.29

The Seattle adventure ended in Capitol Hill Value Village. Here all the salespeople were dressed up in Halloween costumes - interesting - I thought a little early. But what ever floats your boat. I bought 7 coats to resell at the consignment shop coming up at the Puyallup Fairgrounds in October, 2 t-shirts for Kenz, 2 boy sandals, red shoes for me, Community picture cards for school, a metal birdhouse and a wooden box to hold Kenz's jewelery.
 Pink Coat $1.00 Reg. $1.99
Blue Coat $2.00 Reg. $3.99

 Raincoat $2.00 Reg. $3.99

 Red Coat $2.00 Reg. $3.99
Green Coat $2.00 Re. $3.99
Brown Coat $2.00 Reg. $3.99
Green Striped Shirt $1.50 reg. $2.99
Pink Striped Shirt $2.00 reg. $3.99
Red shoes for me $5.00 reg. $9.99
Boy sandals $3.00 reg. $5.99
Boy sandals $2.00 reg. $3.99

Laura and I decided on the way home to stop for lunch and head for River Road Goodwill in Puyallup to look for furniture. She was looking for a glider and I was still looking for a bookcase with moveable shelves. Once at River Road I did find a bookcase and it was half price. No such luck for Laura though - we will still need to keep looking. But alas another day.
 Bookcase $12.49 reg. $25.00
minus all the books

What I bought at Pet Pros with a coupon

The other day when I opened my blue Value Pack (mailed monthly), I was hoping for a Goodwill coupon (I have heard they are in there sometimes) they didn't have it this month. Instead they had a coupon for $5 off $25 of product at Pet Pros.

I stepped into a Pet Pros this past week and they had a special on canned grain free dog food. My Cocker Spaniel has rotten teeth (former owner let him chew on rocks - poor guy), so I decided to start putting some soft food into his food to help him eat and stay healthy. I started putting 1/4 of the can mixed in with part of his dry food and Buddy snarfed it down and of course Mittens the kitty had to help herself to it also. Then I realized I didn't need to put as much of the wet food in each time (this way I could stretch the wet food even more) - Now I put just a Tablespoon + of the wet food and he still loves it and has a clean plate or dish every day.
AvoDerm Grain Free Canned Dog FoodAvoDerm Natural Lite Canned Dog Food

A couple of their brands of food were on sale at buy 2 cans get 1 free, until September 9th. So I thought what the heck and got 3 cans to try. Buddy loves it and he even eats his dry food to boot.

My idea is buy 10 cans and get 5 cans free and spend $20 after the $5 coupon. This should last around 1-1/2 months.

Also if you go here you can receive a $5 coupon on your next bag of dry Avoderm.

Where to find coupons

Sometimes when I am looking on saving money - coupons jump out in the strangest places. I knew Target had there own coupons and cartwheel to save even more money.  But I never thought about looking at Walmart for coupons. You can find them here and you can use them anywhere coupons are accepted.

There are a few blogs that I look at for additional coupon sites. They are hip2save, The Coupon Project, QueenBee and Thrifty and Thriving. These sites have a coupon database that if you are looking for a particular coupon it will list if any are available and where.

Another site that you might not be aware that has coupons is here.

Also there are sites where you can buy whole coupon inserts by the date here is one. Also you can buy individual coupons from eBay, prices vary.

Target deal on Up & Up Kleenex for August 17 - 23

In my classroom, I always buy Kleenex for my students and myself. The stuff the district calls tissue and gives out to classrooms is so rough that over time it increases the soreness around the nose area during cold season and is unacceptable.

Target has a deal on facial tissues:

Up & Up facial tissues (160 ct) for $1.25
Use $.75/1 Target beauty coupon
Also Use 5% off Cartwheel (limit 4)
Total $.48 - stock up price

Thanks, momsbyheart

Reward store in classroom

When I started teaching in a special education classroom, my fellow teachers all mentioned that I would need to have a reward store in my classroom. This system went against all that I believed in. I believed that students should do well in class and not be rewarded for good behavior or doing well on an assignment. Of course I listened to them and had a store which included items that I thought students would like to have.  I have changed the items over the years depending on my students wants and needs (I now ask them what they would like to see in store).

So this brings up this article, since school items are now popping up all over the place with sale prices and coupons. I like to buy store items at the lowest price since these products come out of my pocket.  Fred Meyer this week has Betty Crocker Fruit by the Foot, Gushers, Fruit Roll-ups for $2.50 each and then if you add the Fred Meyer digital coupon onto your card you will have $6/4 deducted off your price (expires 08/24/14). Also this digital coupon can be used 5 times within a single transaction. What this means is you could buy 20 Betty Crocker fruit snacks and receive $30 off. At that rate it would be great for lunches or after school snacks if you have young ones at home or even a pick me up for yourself (watch the sugar level - it's easy to get carried away). I love all of these products.

This would be a stock up price for me since each box would be $1.00.

Also each box should have a Box Tops for Education label and you can cut this out and give it to your PTA or fundraiser committee to collect - you will receive $.10 for each label (awesome fundraiser).
You might think how will just a couple of labels help my school - well if each teacher and student brought in 10 a month ($1.00) that could add up over time.

FREE 8x10 wrapped photo by Canvas People - just pay $14.95 for shipping

FREE 8x10* or 60 Percent at Cart - Create a Canvas
Canvas People is having a great sale on their 8x10 wrapped photo, a $49.99 value, just pay shipping of $14.99. What an awesome deal! If you would like a bigger canvas just take 60% off the original price. Here is a list of all the sizes and prices.

I did this deal a few years back and was quite pleased with the workmanship and the picture has held up well.
The hardest part of this deal is finding the perfect picture out of the thousands I have. It is really easy to do - just follow the directions on the site and it is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Just remember to use no border, since the picture wraps around the frame.

Thanks, hip2save

What I did on my birthday - Today.

Yes, my birthday was today. My parents got me a new mattress - so the plan was to go try out new mattresses. Well I like mine extremely hard and after laying on quite a few they start feeling the same. I decided to take my daughter, Erika with me since she likes soft mattresses, I figured she would be a big help on figuring out which one felt the firmest. We started off at Mattress Depot and laid down on a couple with foam and even though they said that they were firm, they felt too cushiony for me.

Next stop was Sears and I tried a couple more mattresses - by this time I am getting confused about the firmness of the mattress. The salesman was not pushy which I liked but he was a coil man. He let me try a variety of mattresses even one that was valued at $7500. I told him that I had never laid on anything worth $7500, he chuckled. I asked him about a mattress pad and he told me about the Protection pad and even though the price was high it comes with a life time guarantee that if a stain goes through the pad onto the mattress, you call and the company sends someone to clean the stain. If the company can not get the stain out, they will replace the mattress. This is one expense that will work for me since I have grandkids and pets - accidents do happen.

Last stop was Sleep Country Plus Outlet Store - I tried 2 more mattresses. One was a coil and the other was a foam. I definitely like the coil better - firmer, in my opinion. I asked for information and she sent it to my email address. She said that Sleep Country will beat their competitors by 5%. Humm! Then the saleswoman decided to see if any other stores had the models I liked on clearance and with luck there was one in another city for $200 less. She also stated that if I went on YELP.com that I could either get a bed frame free or if I didn't need that I could get a discount on another product. I told her I would get back to her after I read over the material.

Erika and I left the store and ran some more errands, got lost in some residence area with a golf course. We ended going around and around for about half an hour until some how we found a way out - PHEW! Finally got home and checked my email - couldn't find it (the salesperson had spelled it wrong - oh, well!) Then I went on YELP and looked to see what I deal I could get - but couldn't find anything. Talked over the deal with my parents and told them I was looking at the mattress at Sleep Country and they said go for it.

Erika and I piled back into the car and headed for Sleep Country. I told the salesperson that I couldn't find the coupon on YELP and she stated that she had to start the sale to receive the deal. So I downloaded the app and it stated that I could get a free frame and 25% off any product - YIPPEE! So I decided I would take both the frame and 25% off the mattress pad. It became a WIN-WIN solution. Those are the deals that I like and then to top off the deal they are delivering it on Monday.

After returning home, I needed to clear a bookcase out of the way so they will be able to take the old bed out and bring the new bed in. When Erika and I were painting our house a few years back we had a problem with getting the box springs down the stairs - actually the darn thing got stuck and we have a mark still on the stairs to prove it. It actually wouldn't go up or down for a while, thank goodness we finally got it back upstairs.
While cleaning the bookcase out, my friend stopped by to finish cutting my laurel hedge. Yay! It's been almost a month since the hedge was started, I am glad to have this finished. I helped him clean up the debris and put it into my recyclable bins which cleans up my yard (now hopefully my dog doesn't decide to play with the cut branches - oh, well).

That is how I spent my special day. Tomorrow we will be celebrating my day with my family at my parents house and Erika is making the cake (Hot chocolate cake with homemade marshmallows on top - YUM!)

What I bought at Target

I went to Target specifically for the pet food deal going on this week at Target. Of course everyone else was scooping up the Target kitty food and the shelf was empty. I will need to go again this week and retrieve the kitty food and the cat litter and will need to revise what I buy since both items are on sale. I might need to buy another cat litter for me to reach the $40.

Instead of the pet food I was going to buy - I decided to check out the other deals in the store and match them with the coupons I had brought. This is what I got:

1 - 24 pack of watercolor $4.00
2 - Oil Pastels $1.41 each = $2.82 (minus 50% off original price of $1.41 = $.71)
1 - 24 erasable colored pencils $4.49
3 - 10 thin colored markers $1.29 each = $3.87
Used $2 off $10 of crayola products
Total was $12.28
1 post it notes $1.02
 Used $1.00 off Post-it's
Total was $.02
1 Scotch tape $1.00
Used $1.00 off Scotch tape
Total was FREE

1 Juicy Fruit Gum Chews $2.99
Used $.75 coupon for the gum
Used 50% cartwheel coupon for the gum
Total for the gum was $.75
2 Coffee-Mate Creamer @ $1.50 each
Used 2 - $1.00 coupons for the Coffee-Mate
Total for the creamer was $.50 each
 1 Nail polish remover $2.59
1 soccer ball $4.99
the last 2 items my daughter decided to throw in - the soccer ball was important because the last one got kicked under the deck at my parents house

Total spent at Target after all the coupons and then using my Target Red Card  (5% deducted) was $23.43 and I saved $11.13.

School shopping at the Goodwill and Value Village - saving tons of money!

I started school shopping the other day for Kenz. She has grown so much over the year, up and around that some of last year's clothes are now in the bin to be sold at the consignment sale happening in October at the Puyallup Fair Grounds. So the other day, Goodwill was having clothes for 50% off and I thought I would swing by and see what they had. I am glad I did, this is what I bought:
 1 pink shirt for $2.50 reg. $ 4.99
1 Disney shirt for $2.00 reg. $3.99
1 dragon sweatshirt $3.00 reg. $5.99

1 pair of red jeggings $3.00 reg. $5.99
1 pair of blue jeggings $3.00 reg.$5.99
1 pair of dk blue jeggins $3.00 reg. $5.99

 1 light blue sweater $1.50 reg. $2.99
1 raincoat $2.50 reg. $4.99

1 top $3.00 reg. $5.99
1 blue dress $3.00 reg. $5.99

A lot of what I bought at the Goodwill was green tagged and I knew that if I wanted to, I could of waited until Sunday when the green tags were $ 1.29 - but I didn't want to take my chance that these items would be gone.

I spent $
27.92 and saved $25.40.

I took advantage of the promotion that is happening at Value Village currently. If you bring in 2 bags of household items, books, clothes, toys, etc. you will receive a coupon for 30% off your whole purchase. Remember certain tags on Monday are $.99 also (30% is not discounted off the special tags - they are already marked down - no double dipping is allowed). Yesterday I decided to take a carload of items to Value Village to receive my 30% coupon and then I did some shopping. I did some back to school shopping as well (remember I am a teacher and I deserve some new clothes).

1 maroon sleeveless cotton shirt $1.39 reg. $1.99 (minus 30% off)
1 orange tank shirt $1.39 reg. $1.99 (minus 30% off)
1 white with a black trim sleeveless shirt $2.09 reg. $2.99  (minus 30% off)

2 Coldwater Creek tank tops with lace on bottom $2.09 each reg. $2.99 (minus 30% off)

1 jean capri $.99
1 magazine $.20 reg. $.29 (minus 30% off)

Then of course I looked for clothes for the twins and Kenz and this is what I found:
Tigger outerwear (I'm a Tigger fan) for the twins $4.89 reg. $6.99 (minus 30% off)

 1 t-shirt for Kenz $1.40 reg. $1.99 (minus 30% off)
1 pair of Monsters slippers $2.09 reg. $2.99 (minus 30% off)
1 pair of Mickey Mouse slippers $.70 reg. $.99 (minus 30% off)

This trip to Value Village cost me $23.39 and I saved $19.79.

I stopped off at the Goodwill again and I bought this:
1 tan pair of jeggings for $3.00 reg. $5.99
1 patterned pair of jeggings for $1.99 reg. $9.99

1 striped top $2.50 reg. $4.99
