Art Techniques using your pencil

I teach in an alternative educational setting consisting of special education students. These students are here for a variety of reasons. Some are here short term while others are here for a long haul.  I have some flexibility to create ability level curriculum to provide structure and success for each student.

Currently, I have a student in my classroom that is taking art. I as the teacher created an art class including research on 25 different artists, coloring Master’s work of art (I used this book -Art Masterpieces to Color: 60 Great Paintings from Botticelli to Picasso (Dover Art Coloring Book)) and then putting these art styles to his own work ( I used this book -Discovering Great Artists: Hands-On Art for Children in the Styles of the Great Masters (Bright Ideas for Learning) ). The first couple times he colored his Master’s work coloring sheets, the color was all flat. See the student's work below.

My assistant and I showed him how he could create depth and interesting patterns by using the techniques that were shown.

Now my student is using some of the techniques we modeled for him and is interpreting the paintings in an interesting mannerism.

What I am looking for at the Goodwill on 04.27.14

As I plan my trip to the Goodwill today, I am thinking about what I need. Today I am on the search for duct tape in fun patterns (project coming soon) and washi tape (project soon). Hopefully I can find some new containers since I will need almost the whole package for the projects I need. Also I am looking for artsy yard art or things I can change to incorporate into yard art (that includes metal objects, epoxy glue, tubing, pvc piping, jewelry, wire, tea cups, etc).

I have 2 mailboxes that I bought at the Goodwill last year that I was going to repaint and then plant into, but I have changed my mind on the planting part. Some how I screwed up on the painting part last year and left the tape on to long and when I went to rip it off it took all the layers of paint off, not just the layer I wanted off. So now I will have to buff off all the old paint and try something different. Maybe I will use duct tape on the mailboxes to make them colorful. I plan is once I have them colored is too attach them to a post and put all my gardening items in them, so I never have to search for the pruning shears again.

Another think I need to look for is skorts. Kenz informed me that is what is lacking in her wardrobe. You know what a skort is, Right? It is a skirt with shorts underneath. It's quite ingenious when you think of it. Then you don't need the bulk around the waist of having a skirt and a pair of shorts, they are all connected.

I might need small canning jars, small wooden boxes (making soap containers - recipe to follow soon), plastic bins with lids (another project to clean and organize the gift closet), etc.

So, what will I find on this adventure to the Goodwill - it is really any bodies guess. Stay tuned, I will write about it.
